New promo for Nomad

As part of some ongoing work for Nomad Percussion, I created a quick Facebook cover to help promote the event. Below are some other options that I presented. Comment below if you have some feedback!

Seeing double

The illustration for HSBC by Triboro design (top) reminds me of my Terminal project illustrations I did so long ago.

Uniqlo do it again!

Remember the time when Uniqlo hacked Pinterest to create an amazing scrolling animation of their products? Well, this time, they've created a hair tools page to compliment their products - WITH GIFS. I've been mentioning gifs a lot lately, but this is a just a great way to show some simple steps. It makes it a very interesting brand to watch on the digital sphere.

I've recently been extremely impressed by gifs lately. The best ones have an hypnotic quality.

Absolut Redesign

For a brand that has had such a distinct image and playful image with its bottle shape, redesigning the packaging is a pretty big move. So to take an abstract and artistic interpretation of the flavours is actually quite in line with their brand image. And the results pay off with colourful designs with lots of personality.

Never have I seen such extensive and fun process!

Playground

One of the most impressive responsive sites with HTML animation (!) that I've seen lately - Toronto based agency Playground Inc. They have some great case studies too including Canada Goose

Escape Flight

I don't know how long this site has been up, but I would like to think that this was designed especially for me. Escape Flight is PERFECT. This is truly a great idea. Right now for me, I'm just happy to go anywhere within a certain budget.

AND it has great photography, big friendly type and enough yellow to tap into the Expedia aesthetic but also be supercool. I also like the running mail ants hover. (I don't know how else to describe it)

A celebration of life and death.

This is an ad by I&S BBDO for Japanese funeral home Nishinihon Tenrei. It's not often that you see ads for this industry and especially one that is so beautifully crafted. I love the way the layers build upon each other and the translucency reminds us of how fragile life is. There are elements in this that are just very Japanese.

I don't know if this diminshes the work, but it reminds me of the album cover of Ben Lee's Awake is the New Sleep, which is one of the most positive albums I've ever listened to. He did write those songs after a spiritual trip to India.

Seijero Niwa

Upon finishing a day of work, I (you know, just casually) waltzed into the opening of the Seijero Niwa exhibition in East London. There were several sets of freakish dolls with perspex tubes coming out of their eyes. This would give me nightmares if they were in my house but are so cool when they sit on a shiny surface.

Pick Me Up Festival

Last weekend, I went to the Pick Me Up festival. With every exhibtion that I've seen in London, I'm always blown away with the scale of it and I don't know why considering I am in one of the biggest creative cities in the world. I think there is an understated-ness that comes with being English.

My phone died that weekend, so I couldn't take any photos of the event. There are so many talented people but my favourite artist of the day was Sarah Vanbelle. I love the unusual red/green combination of her prints (how did she manage to make it look non-Chistmassy) and the retro graphical quality of her work.

Wayne Levin

I miss the ocean.

Underwater photographs by Wayne Levin. We so often associate the ocean with expanses of blue, but photographing in black and white gives it a majestic and other-worldly quality.

First impressions of London

One of most remarkable things about London is the ease in getting around. Public transport is plentiful and reliable if overcrowded at peak hour times, and reaches all areas of London. I have yet to have ever wait more than 10mins for a train or bus and this includes late at night. It may be strange to be writing about public transport as being one of the most impressive things, but if you've ever lived in Sydney, you would understand.

What has also made getting around London really easy, is their maps which are located almost everywhere around important parts of London. It shows you which direction you're walking in and what is available within a 5 min walking radius. Design details which means you never feel completely lost. I have yet to be in a city which does this so well.

New look SMH

The new look (print and web) Sydney Morning Herald was launched today. Not quite the USA Today make-over I thought was going to happen.

However, it is interesting to see the changes over the years, and how design and journalism adapts to how people access news.

While I like how the new website is less cluttered (white space!), I all feels it's a bit static (why is there no slideshow?) for a site that shows top breaking stories.

Windows of New York

Who would have thought that windows would bring so much delight. This makes me want to be back in New York. My favourite is the one with jail bars and air-conditioner, which reminds me of the episode of Seinfeld where Kramer drops the air-conditioner from Jerry's apartment.

Jose Guizar has other great retro-inspired illustrations too.

Cool video illustrating the 2013 line-up for the Primavera festival in Barcelona.
I like the The Knives-Hot Chip transition.

Why Chinese New Year is better than Christmas

To celebrate Chinese New Year, I've photographed the best part about it – opening red envelopes.

Chinese Stamps

My mother received a letter from China this week and these swanky stamps were on the back. The hot pink and teal lifts it from being nostalgic to being contemporary.

NEW Alliance Française de Sydney website

After many months of work, the Alliance Française de Sydney website is live!
Check it out. Basically, the brief was to get away from the previously corporate feel to the website, and instead present the institution as an lively cultural and linguisitic institution.

Creating a distinct hierarchy of information was priority. Event and courses details were separated to give people the most important information directly and quickly.

More to come!
