Carl Kleiner, you crazy dog

Trippy upside down stuff from Carl Kleiner, who also created the deconstructed food shoot for Ikea. Carl, if you're out there, can you come and help me clean up my room?

It's hard to find nice-looking non-tacky Christmas cards, so it's refreshing to see something like this. From Not on the High Street.

Enjoy soft!

Happiness and ice-cream is a winning combination. I will have ice-cream as a remedy any day.
The ice-cream illustrations are way to cute and the rounded sans-serif typeface compliments soft-serve ice cream nicely. Smiles all round.

Unhate

The image that was pulled from the latest campaign from Benetton as requested by the Pope. But Benetton has always built its brand on controversial, provocative and visceral images that shock us into reflecting on current political and international situations.

"We must express the firmest protest for this absolutely unacceptable use of the image of the Holy Father, manipulated and exploited in a publicity campaign with commercial ends." Vatican spokesman Federico Lombardi said.

Unfortunately, if you are going to be in the public eye, your image will be exploited, rightly or wrongly. It is unfortunate that people see this as an attack on the Catholic faith. Would it have been received differently if this campaign was created not for commercial purposes but for an NGO instead?

Sculptures by the sea

There is something about putting giant things on a beach that is so popular and non-discriminatory. Placing the work outside removes all the confines and rules associated with art institutions.

Also, giant things are always impressive.

So this is a drawing. Do you know how hard it is to draw water and hair??
Amazing work from Paul Cadden.

Unofficial Tintin title sequence

The Adventures of Tintin from James Curran on Vimeo.

I grew up reading Tintin over and over again and it's a very nostalgic time in my life, which is why this video is such a delight. It's amazing what a circle can be.

Also I've had many debates about which is better Asterix or Tintin. I've never read Asterix, but there is something inherently universal about Tintin and as you grow up learning more about history and how the modern world evolved, you realise the things in the stories that you missed out on as a kid.

Orpheum

My favourite painting at the Paris 1911 - Sydney 2011 exhibition. The colours are very Sydney.

It's not Christmas yet.

Do people still have Christmases that look like this? I don't know because I live on a side of the world that doesn't get snow... I imagine a red knitted jumper on 40-something married man that are only acceptable during the festive season. His mother has just left the house in a long furry tan coat to have turkey (is that Christmas or thanksgiving?) with her son's family.

BRAIN

This is the brain drawing that I've done for my major project. If anyone is reading this, any comments would be greatly appreciated. It feels like it needs something else yet I don't know what.

Ronnia

Just bought Ronnia from for my Major Project. I love the little kicks in the semi serifs. How beautiful is the ampersand?

Squeeze Me!

Photography by Christopher Jonassen.

These are so wonderfully weird. They remind me of cheese found on bad pizzas- the plastic unnaturally yellow kind.

Maudie's

This has got to be the funnest looking Mexican Menu every. So much summer fun with the colour crazy woodblock type. It's everything Mexican food is.

I would very much like a magarita but Maudie's is all the way in Texas.

Looking for inspiration from medical drawings for my Major Project. This one is kind of creepy but there's some nice line work there.

Josh Cochran

There is something so quaint and observational about Josh Cochran's illustrations. He has a way with colour and lines.

London riots

http://www.good.is/post/if-we-don-t-riot-you-don-t-listen-to-us-the-case-for-chaos/

The London riots have become headline news all over the world and this article brings to light how limited the media is - how so many problems in the world go (un)reported, and then even less that actually gets noticed. Will the riots make the English government look more closely at underlying social and economic imbalances? Or will they just arrest people hoping that will be enough?

LA Metro

My next design project is about Sydney public transport so be aware that for the next few weeks, there may be a lot more photos/images of trains and buses.

The image above is taken from the LA Metro website. The car-crazy city is trying to make public transport sexy again. Investment in public transport is becoming global trend as cities realise that cars are not the answer to dense cities. And no one likes sitting in traffic.

Also, I really like the pink and yellow buses.

Roiter Zucker identity

Loving this identity system for law firm Roitez Zucker by &Smith. The colours and type are retro and quirky and unlike any identity for a law firm that I can imagine. It definitely stands out from the crowd. I would have loved to have know the reaction from the client when this was presented.

Such a beautiful painting from Swedish artist Linnea Strid. There are others. The way she has captured the water falling is amazing.
